40GB PS3 for $400 is a Target Reality

The picture below is from an inventory search kiosk at a Target store. It clearly shows the 40GB PS3 listed for $399.99. Why Sony doesn't just come out and reveal this thing is a mystery to me. If anyone needed the boost in image right now, it's them.


Clearly, this is what they need to do to compete with the 360. At $599, I just don't see the PS3 ever getting a strong foothold anywhere. I had a PS3 and sold it; the lack of compelling software being the main reason. So, even with the price drop, if Sony can't get some seriously good games on store shelves, they won't be able to give away PS3's.

Analyst says PS3 needs $200 price cut to recover

An analyst at Bank of America believes for Sony to make up the ground they've lost this console generation they don't just need the expected $100 price cut, but a $200 price cut. The analyst who made these remarks to GameDaily.biz, Michael Savner, believes this is unlikely, but believes it is the way to recovery.

Sony considering 80GB PS3 after all

In a reversal of Sony's March assertion that they "don't have plans" to increase the PlayStation 3's hard drive size, Sony spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka now says the company is "considering" a version featuring a drive bigger than the 60GB existing model. This tidbit comes just days after the announced discontinuation of the 20GB PS3 everywhere except Japan.

So, will this news precede an impending price drop for the 60GB PS3? Or will Sony challenge our minds and bank accounts with a new $700 SKU?
