PS3 RED RING OF DEATH?

Last Monday I fired up my PS3 in anticipation of watching Superbad on Blu-Ray, which the wife had so graciously picked up for me. Unfortunately, when I put the disc in nothing happened. No title screen, no indication that the PS3 knew the disc was present at all. I'm not a noob, so of course, I cycled the power on and off and tried again...no luck. O.k., I tried shutting down with the all-powerful black switch in the rear that essentially resets everything on the PS3 and still no luck.

Now I was genuinely concerned. I took out Superbad and put in Call of Duty 4...nothing. "Oh no", and several other choice phrases unfit for print rolled from my tongue, then I went to my computer hoping to find a simple solution online. Instead, I found a wide assortment of posts on various forums reporting the same problem - a sudden inability of the PS3 to recognize any disc - and the solutions weren't exactly what I was hoping. Apparently the problem is caused by leaving a game or movie paused for an extended length of time, or even leaving a disc in at the title screen. Eventually, that fancy Blu-Ray laser burns out forever. Goodbye $600.

Every report invariably lead to a return of the console to Sony for a replacement with varying degrees of success or failure. Worse yet, there were many reports of posts being taken down from Sony's own forums in an apparent attempt to keep the problems out of the press. Unsubstantiated reports said the problem was as common as 25% of all consoles sold. What?!

This was beginning to sound just like my experience with the Xbox 360's red ring of death.

With great trepidation, I called Sony's customer support line.

After waiting on hold for nearly 20 minutes, I was greeted by an American-sounding woman. The next five minutes were spent getting all of my personal information, literally one letter at a time. It was extremely irritating to have to spell out the word "road", but whatever...if it helps me receive the correct service the first time through, then I'll put up with it. After all that, I explained my problem and the rep told me they would send me a prepaid shipping box with detailed instructions on how to box up my console and prepare it for pickup. Turnaround time, she said, would be approximately two weeks for me to receive a new console.

She explained that I could copy all the information I had on my console, including game saves, to a memory card so I would not lose my all-important save data. Then, the genius that is my wife noticed the Best Buy receipt said I still had four days to return or exchange it there since it was a holiday purchase. I explained this to the Sony Rep and she gave me an incident number in case I needed to call back and have the box sent anyway.

I copied all my PS3 data to a mini USB drive, packed up the PS3 and headed to Best Buy with my receipt in hand.

After the Geek Squad checked out the console and verified it was, in fact defective, they told me I could exchange it with no problem as long as they removed the UPC code from the new box - since I had already mailed in the original code for my Blu-Ray movie rebate - and the Spiderman 3 Blu-Ray movie, since I had forgotten to pack it in the box. "Sounds great", I said.

I then decided to purchase the two-year replacement plan for the console for $59.99, which I normally never do. In this case I decided if I had a problem in the future it was worth $60 for the convenience of not having to return it to Sony, plus it bought me an extra year beyond the Sony one-year warranty period.

Once I got home I restored my wireless settings, restored all my save data, and then put Superbad in...hallelujah, success! Of course, I had to re-download all my PSN purchases, but that was no big deal as I set them up to download overnight.

Now, I just hope this one doesn't go bad.

I'll let you know if it does. In the meantime, anyone else had a similar experience? Let us know in the comments.

  1. No way it's 25%. Their failure rate is like less than 1%.

  2. According to Sony, the PS3 failure rate is .o2%.

Unfortunately, this is my second PS3 to go bad. My first PS3 (a launch unit) had disc read errors and constant problems with the bluetooth controllers becoming unsynced. So, my PS3 failure rate so far is 66%.

I haven't had any problems with this unit since I swapped it, but it's only been 6 or so weeks.

Now, if we could just get some good PS3 games. And not games that are done better on the 360.

    Rock on all games!

  3. My PS3 didn't read the discs....but after resetting the console it WORKED!!!

  4. I've been hearing more and more problems with PS3. 40% failure rate is what i'm hearing.

  6. every console is bound to have problems, your ps3 happened to be the one that was defective out of many great working ones. i doubt that the ps3 fail rate is over o.o2% because i personally have a ps3 and it has been working great since the day i bought it which was like one year ago, but if it was a xbox 360, i would have probably already have expierenced the 3 red lights. i hope for the people that was unlucky and got a defective console, they would get it fixed and it would run for a long time.

  8. I had the same problem. 40gig PS3 went bad after about 3 months or so. Stopped recognizing only blu-rays. Dvds would still read. but not BR. I've had my new one for a long time now, no problems at all.

  9. My 60gb PS3's Blu-Ray drive broke after playing GTA4 for a while, then read on the internet that many others are having problems with GTA4 and MGS4 especially somehow damaging the drives on the PS3s.

I am seeing more and more PS3s breaking, mostly the Blu-Ray drive and this was also a problem on the PS1 and PS2. I was so confident in its build quality vs the 360s but now its been reversed, my new Falcon 360 model is perfect whereas I hear of PS3s breaking now.

Very concerning and I am more upset that if I buy a new PS3 model with a better Blu-Ray drive, it won't have the features my precious 60gb had! : (

  10. may I please know all the credible sources that told you it was 40% because I've had my ps3 longer than my xbox 360 and nothing has gone wrong (unlike my 360 which I've sent for repairs twice) I've been hearing 0.02% as well for the ps3.

  11. ha my first ps3 broke so did my second, my third one is coming next friday :)

  12. My PS3 60GB croaked. :(

I load a newly bought "greatest hits" version of Call of Duty 3 and
the unit kept turning off, sometimes with the red light on the front on - some times I had to flip the switch in the back. At first I thought it was the game (because I put another game in and it worked) and I took it back once I got the replaced Call of Duty 3 and put it in the unit crashed for good. I did all the trouble shooting that Sony provided and nothing. I called Sony and am sending it in for repair for $150. Man I hope this isn't a repetitive process - If so I might give up gaming all together. This Sucks! The PS3 was only 18 months old!!! Just barely out of friggin' waranty :(

  13. PS3 bluray drive has now failed for the second time 4 days after being repaired.
Lots of reports on forums of many people having this problem.
Had 360 since launch and been played a lot longer than PS3 and not had any problem.

  14. Hey man i had the same thing happen with me... Yet it was a different sitch. I logged onto COD4 to play a little online play and i experienced some what of the same thing. After two games played i started to load a different game with the same group of players and it started to load until suddenly it stops at a certain point. Almost done loading and the system freezes. But of course since I had the new system update I hit the ps button to go to my XMB screen and nothing happens. Then in return, thinking that the internet reception was lost during the middle of my download or that the game had just frozen, I tried to turn off the system by holding the power button in the front of the ps3. Once I did this the system beeped three times as the power light was blinking. In return it never stopped blinking and had to use the master power button in the back of the ps3 to turn it off. After sending my original ps3 to sony I had the same results. Once I get my supposedly "fixed" system after trying several times hoping that the game would fix itself, yet instead of going to the users screen, it went to the default ps3 background and stayed there not doing anything...Very odd i thought. So in the end Sony sent a replacement. Things have been going smooth lately until today I set up my little cousin to watch Finding Nemo and after about five hours being on straight while my cousin's were playing in my back yard, I find my ps3 sounding like a tea kettle with the green power light on and the other light flashing between blue and red. So from that, I pose my question does anyone know if there is such a thing as the Red Ring of Death or the ps3 model 80gb? I have heard of the Code of Death, yet it doesn't have the same symptoms as the ones my system has experienced. So we will see how this goes....

  15. I was playing some call of duty 4 then my ps3 suddenly cut off. now when i try to turn it on the light turns green for about 2 seconds, then turns orange for a second, then a blinking red. bye bye ps3

your either a moron or a liar. 360s failure rate is less then 30% and they failure way more often then PS3s do.

  17. I don't own a PS3. I found this article because my X360 just died after about 8 months of use and I was considering trading it in on a ps3 after microsoft fixes it.

After reading this and many other articles online, I'm just as skeptical about the ps3 as I am about the 360's.

What really scared me about the ps3 was an article I read about how demand for the ps3's cell processor and blue ray components far exceeds the supply which means the wait for a ps3 repair could drasticly increase in the near future.

I've never been one to play favorites with consoles, and I'm not trying to bash the ps3. The fact is that both the ps3 and x360 are unreliable.

It's pretty sad that console gamers have to choose between two unreliable systems, each priced at around $400.

What I should do is just trade in my 360 for some cash and dust off my old NES. I've had that thing for almost 20 years and never had a single problem with it. The games may be pretty simple by today's standards, but at least I can play them without the fear of my console dying.

  19. I chose to post the previous comment because everyone has a right to their opinion, even if it's wrong. The last link this guy posted starts with the following sentence:

"Sure, it helps that few people are actually playing their PS3s due to a lackluster game library, but you just don't hear about it."

That says it all = all these links are to stories more than 18 months old - before the PS3's problems came to light. Clearly, the PS3 failure rate is higher than 1%. In my house, it's 66% (2 out of 3) and I am a gamer that treats my hardware like gold.

But fanboys will always live in denial...

I am not a fanboy, except of games. I just report what I see. Take it or leave it.

  20. mine just burned out and from what I'm reading online, it seems like a pretty common problem on par with 360's red ring. I'm really disappointed with Sony's paltry 1 year warranty compared to microsoft's 3, especially for a console that is twice the price.

  21. I had problems with my ps3. i had a 60 gb which i got on launch day after a couple of years of bliss (for me and my son) the computer began to fail, due to not reading the disks.
So after looking at the internet, i found a computer repairer called Quantronics, which is based in Sydney Australia. Im from Melbourne so i sent it fully insured via post for it to be fixed. i was told two weeks, great i thought.
then the problems began. After a month they sent it back saying they had replaced the laser, when i received it the machine would not even turn on,so after having a heated conversation with Quantronics, i had to send it back to them, then this weekend when i spoke to them,(other month later) they said the console had suffered the ring of death syndrome, now i thought this didnt happen on the playstation 3, can somebody please advise me if it does?

I cant believe ive been taken for a fool like this, They decided after my extensive negotiating that i will get my repair money back, but no console, as they say its unrepairable, and im not getting a thing for it.

Is it me or are they gonna fix it behind my back and then resell it, cause i know they can make money on a 60gb because its an original..

What does everybody think i should do? Or what can i do??
Im gutted more for my son as he's not gonna get back his console with all his saved data.

All i advise is never go to QUANTRONICS IN SYDNEY AUSTRALIA...

UNLESS YOU LIKE TO THROW YOUR MONEY AWAY AND GET RIPPED OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. I now have the blinking red light of death. I think this is BS. I pay 500 bucks for something that lasts 18 months. So I quess I'll need to buy another one with warranty extended and return it just before the warranty expires, and lie that it doesn't work. WTF, we paid lots of money for this, you would think they should last for the moneys worth. Some people say the problem is from the hard drive, others say it's overheating. Either way Sony sucks, and I'll never buy their sh*t again!!!!

  23. My PS3(40G) died recently( wont read any disks) as well and i have never felt so betrayed or ripped of by the gaming industry. It was a gift from my girlfriend last year when she knew how bad i wanted 1, she could hardly afford it but she got it anyway, i was soo happy. Then last saturday i was soo disgusted, it died right in the middle of Farcry 2. $399(+tax, + games,+ xtra controller and the eye), for nothing.

Easily more than a grand spent... no wasted. And after all of that and my toll free # xperience with sony, i have 2 shell out another $175 to have my system fixed or replaced ... with a refurb.

I m no newbie either, i had my first atari when i was 7(i m 34 now). Over the years i have had almost every system available, thousands of games played, i love playin games, always have. PS1 and PS2 were good systems i killed several of em literally wore em out playin games. One percent fail rate my ass.

Sony has left me sick to my stomach with a $500 piece of crap and 8 games that will never b played by me again on a PS3.It sits in the box in my closet now, and thats where the junk will stay until i decide wat 2 do wit it.

So as a hardcore gamer i switched over 2 the 360($450- 60Gb, 1 game and charge kit), several of my friends own 1 and in fact are on their 3rd and 4th systems so now i play my games waiting 4 dat system 2 die so i can spend another grand.

Always been proud 2 b a gamer, always loved playin games. But i hate the way i have been treated by these corporations. Is this how i m thanked 4 my loyalty, 4 my support to the gaming industry, 4 my thousands of dollars spent over the last 25yrs. TYPICAL!!!

Yea my 360 will probably kick the bucket 2 soon 2 but at least it will b cheaper 2 replace, and they do somethin about their hi fail rate instead of hide it.

I once got so much enjoyment out of my sony systems but now i m pissed and SONY wont b welcome in my game library 4 a very long time. If they go under like people r predicting
alot of gamers wont care because they will b 2 busy playin a better cheaper machine, this guy certainly will be.

    DIE SONY DIE!!!!!

  24. Sorry to hear about your experience with your PS3. Welcome to the club of the disheartened. I've never been a big Sony "guy", and my experience has definitely put me off any Sony products for a long time, like you. I love my 360, even though I am on my third one, and it's because Microsoft has earned my loyalty by taking responsibility for their product. They have never charged me a dime to fix my systems, and even game me two free games and two free months of Xbox Live for my troubles. Better yet, it seems this last repair may be the last, as they now repair them using the newer design of heatsink, which seems was always the problem from the beginning.

Sony's lack of empathy for their customers is disappointing, especially considering I'd love to play Killzone 2 and MLB09, as I've heard and read great thing about both games...but sadly, I will likely never play either. I simply can't justify the kind of money they want to buy another PS3.

Here's looking forward to the next Xbox...I have a feeling Microsoft is going to be the King of the next, "Next Generation" of gaming. Let's just hope they offer the three year warranty from the beginning of the next console cycle...I suspect they will.

    Good gaming!!

  25. I had the EXACT same problem. The console would not read disks of any kind. I did, in fact, have to send mine bank to Sony. They sent me the shipping box and I sent my console to them. Turnaround time was roughly 2 weeks. The same console came back to me in working order will all of my save data. The Sony rep on the phone said that the problem may be related to overheating and that the console should not be left on while sitting on carpet (which retains heat from the console / fan).

You're a dumb ass if you believe yourself. And I love the one that has the links to the playstation sites for the return percentages, now that's a good one there. lol like they're gonna admit the truth! give me a break. Try this link. It's a do it yourself manual for the ps3, including a "how to fix" many problems for the ps3. The manual only costs like 25 bucks. I think it's better than spending hundreds of dollars on something that you can do it yourself.
