According to figures sited by Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, 67% of Wii's in households are sitting unused.
I know I haven't personally touched my Wii in a while. (stop chuckling) Where are the compelling software titles? MySims was fun for about a day but then just couldn't hold my attention; not when I have Halo 3 and Project Gotham Racing 4 for my Xbox 360 just begging for attention.
The Wii has not seen a big hit title since Wii Sports, and that was a pack-in title. I know Nintendo is printing money with the console right now but this cannot be a healthy sign for the future of their cash cow.
With Nintendo's stock value increasing five-fold since the release of the Wii, is the time approaching to sell high?

"The mass market, who have bought the Wii, are not going to use it every day. Unlike core gamers they have got a life. So they are only going to fit Wii time into their busy lives when something comes along to pique their interest. Economists might call it something like marginal propensity to play."

I see your point, but at least in my case I have to disagree. I am a core gamer and I don't play my Wii because there is no compelling software. No console can sustain growth without a library of quality titles. I believe Nintendo is getting an artificial demand from their lack of production. Once production catches up, there will be an initial run on hardware, then it will slowly dwindle as the realisation hits that there are no games to play on the console. Time will prove me right or wrong.

Just to add, 67% of people polled (polled being the keyword here).
ReplyDeleteThis report would have you believe it's 67% of the entire Wii install base not using the console regularly.
Exactly how many Famitsu readers were polled? I know I wasn't included. Were you?
Well, I know most of my friedns who own Wii's aren't playing them. And that whole list of games you mentioned AREN'T OUT NOW!! We aren't discussing future playing, we are discussing right now. You seem awfully defensive about the Wii's lack of attention from it's owners. If you owned a 360, or even a PS3, you'd probably never touch your Wii either. That's pure conjencture, but I trust my gut on this one. Mini games and Zelda can only get you so far.
ReplyDeleteRight now, demand for Wii continues to exceed the supply despite the lack of games at present. I was merely pointing out that compelling software is coming which will help sustain the growth of Wii.
